This is a large file (1600 by 1200). I’m trying to get back into doing wallpapers, but it’s difficult due to some personal stuff. Bah! Enough of that prattle, here’s a wallpaper!

Not dead! Massive set of guest wallpapers to tide you over.

Posted By Mousewrites on June 2, 2010

    Hey all!

No, I’m not dead, I’ve just been very, very busy. For one, I’ve been running a tabletop RPG for 10 people (ye gods, I must be mad) that has taken up a lot of my free time. Yes, of course there are airships in it. It’s a reality-bending modern game set in Oklahoma. You can find the website for it here if you want to poke about. The website isn’t Steampunk, but some of the puzzles hidden on it are.

I hope to be back to making wallpapers soon! In the meantime, here’s a fairly large set of guest wallpapers that have been building up over the last two months.

NOTE: if you submitted one of these, and you have additional info about them, please let me know! I didn’t get a lot of info with all of them. :D

First up, five wallpapers from http://www.escapetheclouds.com/

All are 1920×1080, but they’ve got other versions at the link above.

Second, a bit of propaganda from the webcomic Clockworks. Start at the beginning here if you want the whole story.
Third, a piece called Fumo Fenestra (Steam Windows in Latin) from 3d artist X at BattleaxeGFX. X, I didn’t get a name for you, so let me know who the heck you are! :D

EDIT: X is artist rattle! Thanks for the awesome wallpaper, rattle!

User Stramp has some lovely sub papers at WinCustomize. In fact, there’s a whole subset at WinCustomize for Steampunk, including widgets and icons as well as wallpapers.
And last but not least is this piece from http://www.darkartistry.com. It was submitted, but I didn’t get any artist’s info out of it, sadly.

If it’s too subtle, please leave a comment and let me know.  I’ve already had to explain it to about six people that I’ve shown before posting, so I tried to add a few hints.  Comments are good!

Penguin Books likes us enough to violate our Creative Commons License! Whee!!

Posted By Mousewrites on January 27, 2010

So, I understand that book publishers leave all the promotion up to the authors, and I understand that authors, even best-selling ones, aren’t generally rich.

But as far as I can tell, almost every image in this promotional video for Katie Macalister’s Steampunk romance Steamed is used without credit:

[video taken down, though I have a copy on my harddrive]

My background is at :51, at least: Gears and wrought iron, and I’m fairly certain the blurry mechanical bits under the word “Victim” at :08 are mine too.

Note to self: new theme is terrible for searching. Fix that.

Anyway, both images are Creative Commons Licensed, which means Penguin is violating the license in three ways: they’re using it commercially, didn’t attribute me, AND didn’t release their work under CC.

I’ve moved my Creative Commons License info up to be more noticeable, and I’ve written them a email as well. We’ll see what happens.

    … I’m flattered, though.

Edit: this is a long and complicated blamechain. Still working it out.

New feature: Top 100 Wallpaper list and Top 10 Wallpaper sidebar

Posted By Mousewrites on January 26, 2010

    Hey, all!

I’ve been scrubbing at the site a bit, and one thing people have requested is a way to view more wallpapers. Enter the Top 100 Wallpapers section of the website, and the sidebar showing the Top 10. The wallpapers are displayed by number of views since 1/25/10, so they will have a period of “shuffling” before they settle into a true “best of” list.

Please give it a look, and let me know what you think.

    Upcoming features:

Fixing the broken Contact Us page (should be done very soon)
Visual index of ALL wallpapers, with content filters so that you can narrow your search. (This one is hard. :D )

Admin note: playing with the theme.

As I said, the “travel” theme was a placeholder. I’m going to be messing with the theme today, so you might see some weirdness. :D
